Wednesday’s Hollywood Program

After taking the weekend off for the 4th of July I’m ready to tackle the last week of the Hollywood Park meet. I generally advise people to take caution in betting the last week of any meet. The shed row of a major thoroughbred meet is full of colorful characters who live transiant lives going from track to track plying their trades. Trainers, Grooms, Hot Walkers and other carnival types need to make money to move on to their next destination. In this case they are moving down the coast about 110 miles. To be at the track at 4:30 am every morning and on the track in the afternoons every day you can’t commute from Hollywood. Many need to rent appartments, an R.V. space, or other temporary accomodations for the Del Mar Meet. There always seems to be a couple of horses at the end of every meet that everyone on the shed row knows about, but nobody else does. They always pay well, but not as good as they should have, and everyone seems to get to the next meet with a little money in their pocket. Anyway, I like to look out for those horses during “Get Away Week” as we used to call it back in Nebraska.

Race 1 at Hollywood is a $62,500 Claimer for 3 year olds at 6 1/2 furlongs over the Cushion Track. South Bay Scotty looks like he’ll be tough to beat in here today. He had some traffic problems last time out, and still got up to beat two of these winning the race by a nose. Normally I’d expect a horse to bounce off a nose win and look for a longshot, but since he’s coming off a win at this level and stretching out a little, I think he’ll beat these. The extra 1/2 furlong should help him a little but there isn’t much pace in here which could cause him some problems. I’ll use Storm Brave in here underneath. Doug O’Neill has him back in his barn and I look for a little improvement in his third start as a 3 year old. I’ll use Fantasy Free underneath these two.

Race 2 is a $25,000 Maiden Claimer for 3 year olds at 7 furlongs over the Cushion Track. I would love to see Iggy Puglisi get another win at Hollywood and this looks like his chance. He rides I’ve Got Glory in here and Trainer Jenine Sahadi’s winning at 40% going from route to sprint with a $4.64 ROI. I’ll use him on top with Sir Carson and Red Ticket underneath.

Race 3 is a $40,000 Maiden Claimer Cal Bred two year old fillies at 5 1/2 furlongs over the Cushion Track. I’m going to try to beat Golden Rocketship in here. I know she ran a nice 61 Beyer last out and was beaten a nose. She looks pretty tough, but I’ll go to Brian Koriner’s first timer Legacy North. Koriner wins 22% with Maiden Claimers and 14% of first starts. He and Joe Talamo have combined to win with 36% percent of the horses they run together. I’ll have to use Golden Rocketship underneath. I’ll combine her with first timer Megahottie in some exacta and trifectas today.

The 4th race is a $10,000 Claimer for 4 year olds and up at 6 1/2 furlongs. Mike Chambers shows for the last week of Hollywood. I don’t know where he’s been but he sends out Corporal Tillman from Turf Paradise. Where ever Chambers comes from he did well there winning 40% in claiming races with 222 starters. Corporal Tillman hasn’t run on a synthetic surface yet, but comes out of some nice races at Turf Paradise and Canterbury Park. Speaking of Turf Paradise, Molly Pearson sends out He’s a flyer today who’s had two outs at Hollywood since coming in from the desert. He was beaten by probable favorite Lake Dayjur last out. I’ll use those two under Corporal Tillman and do a 3 horse box in here.

Race 5 is an Allowanc Race for 3 year olds and upwards bred in California. These have never won $7,500 other than Maiden, Claiming, or Starter or are non-winners of two. They’ll go a mile and one sixteenth over the Hollywood Turf Course. Some of you may remember I was very high on Brian the Bold the last time he ran. He looked like an easy winner at the top of the stretch but just couldn’t hold off Mr. Chairman. I’ll try him again today looking for improvement off his last two. He had all kinds of trouble two back and should have beaten the field that day. Anzisong lead most of the way around that day and B.B. caught him pretty easily. I’ll use Dr. Zaentz in here with these two.

The six race is a $32,000 Maiden Claimer for fillies and mares 3 years old and up at 5 1/2 furlongs Over the Cushion Track. I’m going to try a longshot in here in first time starter Enabler. Aurthur Lerille, owns, bred, and trains this one. He doesn’t run a lot of them but he’s 33% at Hollywood as a trainer, and 23% for the year. He pays a decent price when he wins, and I love these Benchmark horses on the synthetic surfaces. Ata Honour comes off the layoff and gets a rider upgrade to Go Go Gomez today and has a shot. I’ll use Allota Wild with these two.

The seventh race is a Allowance / Optional Claimer for $100,000 at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf for fillies and mares three years old and up which have never won $7,500 three times other than maiden claiming, or starter, have never won 4 races, or are in for the $100,000 tag today. Moujane has 2 wins in 4 starts on grass, as well as a second and a third. I think she’ll like the Hollywood course again where she’s one for two and get the win. Persian Express has six lifetime wins, but fits this condition by running for the claiming tag. I’ll use Tutta Bella with these two.

The eighth and final is a $25,000 Maiden Claimer for 3 year olds and up at seven furlongs over the Cushion Track. Mike Chambers shows up again here as the trainer of Cold Pursuit. His numbers get even gawdier in here with 55% for first time starters, and 50% for Maiden Claiming first time starters. He gets Gomez aboard and I’ll try him today. I’ll use Little Red Feather stable’s Source of Pleasure with him at a possible price dropping in from $70,000 claiming. I’ll use probable favorite Brite Ruler as well.

Good Luck;

Ron
