Thursday’s Hollywood Park Card

I couldn’t find a form for Hollywood Park yesterday in a city that is in the middle of a live race meet. It looked like I might have had a good day had I played, but today is another day so we’ll give it a try. The new card arrived and I have renewed my Daily Racing Form subscription so let’s get busy. There’s a big carryover in the Pick 6 today, but the card looks a little chalky.

Race 1 is a $40,000 claimer for 3 year olds at seven furlongs over the Cushion Track. High Stakes Silver goes turf to synthetic today where trainer Vladimir Cerin wins at a 24% clip. He hasn’t shown much lately but has some class and gets the blinkers off today. Reel Prime is a very consistant type dropping in from $50,000 claiming today and has a shot. Skyspy’s moving up in class and may also light the board having done so in five of eight tries on synthetic surfaces.

The second race today is a race for bottom level claimers at an $8,000 tag. These 4 year old and up horses will go seven furlongs over the Cushion Track. Hemet looks like a pretty good bet here in the 2nd race if you can get the 2/1 morning line. He’s a little bit of a head case running 2nd five times with a win over synthetic surfaces. They tried him on the turf in a state bred allowance race last out and he didn’t seem to care for it. Go back 3 races before he was claimed and busted off a 97 Beyer figure. An effort close to that today will win this one if he decides to pass the last horse. Outside Looking In takes a drop in class after running 2nd a neck for $12,500. He’s been fairly consistent at the $10,000 - $12,500 level and may just need this last drop to score. Courtly Jazz completes what looks to be a pretty chalky 2nd race today.

Race 3 is a $25,000 Claimer for 3 year old and up, non-winners of 2 lifetime at a mile and one sixteenth over the Cushion Track. This race kicks off the Pick 6 today with a large carryover pool of three quarters of a million dollars. Informed may be the key to the Pick 6 sequence. He will be singled on many tickets hoping to get by this first leg fairly cheaply. He’s dropping out of allowance company where he’s run well but is coming off a layoff. He’s not earned anywhere near his half a million dollar purchase price, and now Bob Baffert drops him in for a $25,000 tag. Baffert plays poker like this occassionally and will try to steal a purse like blinds at a poker table. He’ll also dump a horse that’s not going to reach his potential fairly quickly too so you never know. I’m going to guess that he’s stealing the blinds, and possibly the Pick 6 and use Informed today. Angus also drops in from $50,000 after trying the turf where he ran pretty well. His previous synthetic track races make him a contender in here. I’ll use Elregalo in here with these two even though he looks a little cheap.

Race 4 is a $25,000 Maiden Claimer for 3 year olds and up at 7 furlongs over the Cushion Track. Deputy Prize is second off the layoff where Martin Jones wins at 21%. He takes another drop in class after getting beat soundly in Maiden Special Weights, and $40,000 Maiden Claiming. He finished up the track those outs, but may be in the right spot today running against almost all Cal breds. Quiet Revolution is also second off the layoff, and the only other horse in here who’s not a Cal bred. He should move up enough to get by Cold Prince today after having an out over the track. Vanaldi looks good in here and I’ll have to use him on my Pick 6 ticket, but I’ll pass on him for most of my bets on this race.

Race 5 is a $12,500 Claimer for four year olds and up at 7 furlongs over the Cushion Track. Refinery drops in from $40,000. After a good effort at $25,000 coming off a year and a half layoff Refinery gets beat a neck first out for $25,000 with a nice 85 Beyer figure. The next out they switch to a mile, and try the turf which he didn’t seem to care for. He’s back sprinting on the synthetic track today and any improvement from that 2nd place finish two back will result in a win at a decent price today at 5/1 on the morning line. Cousin’s Lew has a big fan in trainer Brian Koriner who claimed him for the third time last out where he ran a huge 96 Beyer figure, but was beaten a neck. He’s been claimed his last four starts spreading out running a first, second, third and fourth in those four races. That may mean he’ll run 5th today to get the superfecta. In any case, I’ll leave him off my pick 6 ticket and use Jamie instead.

Race 6 is a $32,000 Maiden Claimer for fillies and mares three years old and up at a distance of 7 1/2 furlongs over the Cushion Track. Molitta drops from Maiden Special Weights, and it looks like Vladimir Cerin has a soft spot for rider J.L.M Campos. Matt Garcia usually gets Vlad’s mounts, but Campos has ridden seven of Cerin’s horses this meet winning with 43% with a $5.46 ROI. Little Brenda hopped in the air at the start in a Friday Night race last time out. Back in the daytime I might get a price on her stepping up to $32,000 today. Ann’s Approval gets the blinkers off after getting beat by one that came back to win again last out.

The seventh is an Allowance / Optional Claimer with a $125,000 tag for 4 year olds and upward which have never won $7,500 three times, never won four races, or have not won a race other than maiden, claiming, or starter since August 1, 2007, or are in for the $125,000 claiming tag. They’ll go a mile and one sixteenth over the Cushion Track today. Tall Texan has done everything asked of him so far. A perfect 3 for 3 sprinting on synthetic surfaces, the mile and a sixteenth should be to his liking, and result in improvement against a little tougher bunch than he’s used to. Zappa gets by all the conditions today by running for the Claiming tag. His last five outs have been in Graded Stakes company and he won one of those. Luhuk’s Dancer ran a big one first off the layoff with a 99 Beyer and then a nice second in a $100,000 Allowance / Optional Claimer.

Race 8 is a $40,000 Maiden Claimer and the final leg of the Pick 6. It features 2 year old fillies going 5 furlongs over the Cushion Track. I’ll put first time starter Paradisi on to today. Christopher Paasch doesn’t win with a lot of first timers, but I like the Lost Soldier breeding and will take a little shot at a price. I’ll give Chatty Lulu another try today as well. She’s been well beaten by a few good ones, and might like being on the outside. I’ll use another firster in Sagebrush Angel underneath.
