Saturday’s Hollywood Card

Friday Night’s Hollywood card didn’t go very well last night. The only tickets I have to cash today were scratches from last night. I’ll take them back and try it again today because I just don’t know any better. It looks like it could be a little chalky today but I’ve found a couple at prices I can take a couple little shots at.

Race 1 is a $62,500 Allowance / Optional Claimer for 3 year olds and up which have never won $7,500 twice other than, or are non-winners of 3, or are in for the $62,500 claiming tag. They’ll go a mile and a sixteenth on the Hollywood Park Cushion Track. Rapidity makes his second start in North America after a poor effort in the Grade III Laz Barerra last month. I look for improvement in his second start. Pointing Star has two wins and two seconds in nine starts at Hollywood and gets the nod for the place. I’ll use Gregorian Bay in the show spot.

Race 2 is a Maiden Special Weights race for Cal Bred 3 year olds and up at 7 furlongs over the Cushion Track. Sweepemup looks much the best in here, but won’t be worth betting. That kind of makes the race not worth betting, unless you can find one at a price with a chance. I don’t really see one in here. It’s possible Sweepemup could bounce after a tough nose lose last out. Even if he does he can beat most of these. Major Smoke or Draft Choice might be able to beat him if he throws in a clunker.

Race 3 is the Grade III Cinema Handicap for 3 year olds at a mile and an eighth on the grass. I think the added distance will help Tiz West turn it around today. I look for Liberian Freighter and Polonius to hook up on the front end, fueling Tiz West’s Advantage with a hot pace. They are both capable of holding on to light the board though and I’ll use them underneath.

The 4th is starter allowance for 3 year olds and upward fillies and mares which have broken their maidens for $40,000 or less and are non-winners of two races at 5 1/2 furlongs. It looks like it’s going to be a chalky day at Hollywood. Msty Ally is 4/1 on the morning line and just broke her maiden for $25,000. She won that race by 5 lengths with an 80 Beyer figure, and was under wraps at the wire, so she could improve off that race. King City Kitty was a beaten favorite last out with a wide trip and is the morning line favorite today. Lauren C. hasn’t gotten on track since she broke her maiden at Del Mar last year, but is second off the layoff today and wouldn’t be a surprise.

Race 5 is a $16,000 Claiming Race for 4 year olds and up at 6 furlongs over the Cushion Track. Lake Dayjur looks to be picking up where he left of two years ago when he was running for $50,000. He came back after the long layoff dropping in for $8,000 and ran 4th at 24/1. He came back to win his next at the $10,500 level, and moves up to $16,000 today. The good part; he’s 8/1 on the morning line. In a similar situation Dwango was off for 3 years after consistently running 100+ Beyer figures and winning allowance races in New York. He showed up at Hollywood in April and ran 10th in a $40,000 claimer at 19/1. I don’t think he’ll come back as well as Lake Dayjur. I’ve been betting Grits for a while now and he drops in from $20,000 and may have a shot in here. He gets the blinkers off, but for some reason run out of the dention barn today. I haven’t yet found out why he’s there, but I will before I bet this race, or I won’t bet it.

The sixth is a Maiden Special Weights Race for 3 years old and up at a mile over the Hollywood Park Turf Course. I like Dakota Phone in here today. He’s broken the 80 Beyer barrier and tries the turf for the first time. He doesn’t have a big Tomlinson rating for grass, but has Spinning World in his pedigree and I think he can outrun it. One that does have a good grass figure is Royally Smart, a first time starter by Royal Academy out of a Miswaki mare. At 20/1 I’ll give him a try along with B’s Lucky Strike.

Race 7 is a $16,000 Claimer for 4 year olds and up at a mile and a sixteenth on the Cushion Track. Presidential Cause takes a slight drop, but it may be enough to get a win here. Quasimodo is 8/1 on the morning line even though he’s won 4 of his last 5. They were against lesser competition, but he may be able to handle these too. Jeff Mullins brings in Candlestick Park from the desert to try big time and he may be around at the wire.

The 8th is an Allowance Race at 6 furlongs on the turf for three year olds and up which have never won $7,500 other than, and are non-winners of two races. I don’t usually bet horses the first time in the U.S. but I’m betting Top Class today. He didn’t pan out in Ireland as a 1.6 million dollar Keeneland Sale purchase. He’s been off almost a year so he’s been in town a while. At 5/1 on the morning line and getting lasix for the first time I’ll take a shot. Mandella also sends out Water Mill who was also an expensive purchase. He’s had an out in the U.S. so I’ll use him too. I’ll use Quick Enough with these two.

The 9th is a $40,000 Maiden Claimer for Cal Bred 3 year olds and up at 5 1/2 furlongs on the Cushion Track. Magnetize is a nice first time starter for Doug O’Neill and at 8/1 is worth taking a shot at. I’ll use Adhere and Lil Bro with him.

Good Luck;

Ron
