Saturday’s Arapahoe Park Card
Today is Intothebit Day at Arapahoe Park, they just don’t know it. We’ve got a small group going of family and friends and plan to watch some live horse racing for a change, make a little money, and spend it all back on drinks. I haven’t kept up with Arapahoe Park much even though it’s the racetrack closest to me in proximity. They run a mixed meet of Quarter Horses, Arabian’s and Thoroughbreds. I don’t really know how to handicap Quarter Horse races, but I’ll take a whack at it like I do everything else. Hollywood Park’s Friday night card went pretty well so but I’ll be at Arapahoe today, and tried handicapping that card. The late night Hollywood card got me home a little late last night so the last 5 races at Arapahoe were kind of thrown together, but I put a lot of thought into the first three races.
The first race is a 350 yard race for 3 year old and up Maidens with a $4,300 purse. These conditions are a little more liberal than I’m used to at Hollywood Park, so let’s see what we have. The first race is some kind of mixed bag of Quarter Horses. There’s a 4 year old gelding, 2 3 year old geldings, a 3 year old colt, two 4 year old fillies and 4 3 year old fillies in it. I guess I’ll do this just like it’s thoroughbreds so here we go. Now a Lady 2nd off the layoff after finishing 3rd by 3/4 in here first start at Arapahoe off an 11 month layoff. She ran well against better at Los Alamitos last year and got some action Maiden Claimers there. She’s made more money than any of the others in the field by quite a bit so I’ll give her a shot at 8/1 on the morning line. Streaks Last Man got beat a nose at this level last time out. He also ran at Los Al and at Remington Park where the competition is a little stiffer. A little Storm ran in some kind of Handicap two races back, was beaten 3/4 of a length by Streak’s Last Man last out so I’ll use her too.
Race 2 is another Quarter Horse race at 330 yards this time. This one’s an Allowance race with a $9,000 purse for 3 year olds and up, non-winners of two races. Check Out This Gal has apparently been running against better. The $26,926 she’s made running is more than double any of the other runners in here. She broke her Maiden at Remington Park where I think the competition is a cut above these. She was only beaten a head her last out at Remington Park in a tougher allowance race than this and her :11.68 workout was the best of 22 horses in April which eases my mind of any problems she may have with the altitude here. Streaking for Bully comes out of a couple of long shot tries at Stakes races. She looks to like this shorter distance and should be on the board today. Now Im Dun has some pretty quick times and could get a minor award today.
Race 3 is another type of horse I know nothing about, Arabians. These do seem closer to Thoroughbreds and are running a normal distance of 5 1/2 furlongs. I even recognize a couple of names from the Nebraska racing circuit. Kayschndig was the only one of these that has run that came within 10 lengths of a horse called Black Beaches. Most of the others were 15-20 lenghts back. The ones that have run were no where near last out, so I’ll go to the first time starters underneath. Dancers Misty Reign and Fredabaskin haven’t run yet so I don’t know if they are as bad as the rest of the field.
Race 4 is the first thoroughbred race. Illusive Crystals won her only start by 9 1/2 lengths and should beat these. Stablemate and workout partner Crystal Blu Skies debutes and should be right behind. I’ll try Pretty Storm, Monk Hall’s entry underneath those two.
Race 5 Looks like I Got Lucky. Heaven’s prize isn’t without a chance, and I put Crystal Dynasty underneath.
In the 6th only one of the runners has started. Wicked Flyer ran once and won. I like to bet a horse who’s won a race over one who hasn’t, but I think there are a few in here who can run. I’ll use Haxtun’s Ace on top with Home Run King and Wicked Flyer.
Race 7 I’ll use Curlys Day with Rocktober and Dance to the Star.
The 8th I like Pray for Cash, Love for Money, and Runaway Bee.
And in the last race today I’ll use Polar Barron with Pediction and Northern Dandy.
Good Luck;
Ron
