Del Mar’s Wednesday Card

Del Mar has been a little tough for me to get going on. I was soured on their Polytrack last year, but it seems to have improved. Still my handicapping is off, and I don’t care for losing money. I’ve been taking it easy for most of the meet, but can’t keep that up forever. I’ll take a good shot again Wednesday and hope for a turn-around.

Wednesday’s card starts with a $40,000 Starter Allowance for fillies and mares 3 years old and up which have broken their maidens for $40,000 or less and have never won two races. They’ll go a mile over the Polytrack in this one. Rapid Goose drops out of straight claimers to take a shot at a Starter Allowance race. She’s gotten as high as $62,500 on the claiming ladder without ever getting a win, and should be tough in here. Sheza Maneater is a consistent type for Bob Baffert. She ran decent as the beaten favorite at this level last out, and gets the blinkers off today. Pretorian Falls goes turf to dirt today. She didn’t seem to care for the Polytracks at Turfway Park, or Keeneland, but may be good enough to overcome that against these.

Race 2 is an Allowance / Optional Claimer for $40,000 for 3 year olds and up which have never won $7,500 other than Maiden, Claiming, or Starter, or are non-winners of 2, or are in for the $40,000 tag. This one’s a five furlong sprint on the turf course. With my first two choices Recoil and Rudimeanie scratched . I’ll use Pocosin’s Game Boy on top off a good effort over this surface and distance last out. I’ll use Furioso’s Star and Bashert with him.

Race 3 is a $40,000 Maiden Claimer for Cal Bred two year old fillies at 5 1/2 furlongs over the Polytrack. Steal My Charm has been a bit unlucky, running into Wendoffer and Streamin Heat twice each. She should be good enough to beat this bunch though dropping into the claiming ranks. I like first timer Gambler’s Rule at a little bit of a price. Jorge Periban wins at 18% with 2 year olds. Brian Koriner sends out Legacy North for her second start. Koriner wins 31% with his second time starters.

The 4th race is a $25,000 Claimer for 3 year olds and up that have never won two races at a mile over the Polytrack. Only Him was scratched so I’ll use North Fork who may be in a little tough. He ran second last out at $12,500, but broke his maiden by 3 lengths at Boise. Mike Mitchell just claimed him and wins 29% off the claim, so I’ll trust that he’s in a good spot today. Hebesmallbutmighty has only one out on a synthetic surface, but that was a nice winning effort at Santa Anita. If he likes the track he may be tough as well. I’ll use Angus underneath because of the scratch.

Race # 5 is a $40,000 Maiden Claimer for Cal Bred Fillies and Mares 3 years old and up at 6 1/2 furlongs over the Polytrack. I’m going to try a long shot in here I think. Seacoast is the only one in this bunch that ran against open company in her only start for $50,000. She ran poorly and put up a terrible 33 Beyer Figure. I think the competition in that on was much better than these others have faced though, and I’ll give her a try at 15/1. I like the breeding…Cee’s Tizzy out of a Storm Cat mare, and think she’ll improve. The Martin Jones/David Flores trainer jockey combination is 50% for the meet, and Jones is 19% 2nd time out. Ms Toomsuba looks like the likely favorite and ran a nice 2nd in a Cal Bred Maiden Special Weights race last out. Salah’s Jewels was the beaten favorite last out at this level but ran a nice 2nd but was scratched today so I’ll use Ima Offended underneath.

The sixth race is a $62,500 Claimer for 3 year olds at a mile over the Turf Course. Enactment had a tough go of it last out when beaten by Wild and Ready. He looked to have plenty of horse, but just couldn’t get through at the rail. Wild and Ready mean while went outside and just go the jump on him. It’s hard to tell how far Enactment would have won by could he have gotten through, but he would have won it. I’ll use Guts in second today. He ran third in that race, and I think Wild and Ready really spent himself getting this win and would think he may bounce today, so I’ll use Rhetorically in the 2nd and third spots.

Race 7 is the 40th running of the Grade III Sorrento Stakes with a $150,000 purse for 2 year old fillies at 6 1/2 furlongs. This is really a nice little two year old race. I’m going for a little bit of a price in here just because so many of them look good. Evita Argentina won her only start pretty easily against lesser. I’m really impressed with up and coming sire; Candy Ride however and like what I see in Evita Argentina. I’ll use her with the three inside horses in trifecta keys and get away from this one with $18 invested in trifectas and some win money on Evita Argentina if the price is right. Emmy Darling and Cosmic Queen have been quite impressive, and Trifecta King has too. I’ll have to use them all. This is also the Del Mar Handicapping Contest race of the day so a win with 8/1 morning line Evita Argentina would help out there as well.

Race 8 is a Maiden Claimer for $25,000 for 3 year olds and upwards at a mile and one sixteenth over the Polytrack. As a general rule I’ll bet a winner over horses that have never won a race. There are some exceptions, but not today. Bodacat won his last out at this level, but was disqualified. He bumped Scotty Jones twice down the lane and still won half a length. I’ll use Yes Yes Ohyes second dropping in from Maiden Special Weights and El Supremo third dropping in from $40,000 Maiden Claiming.

Good Luck;

Ron
